Composition, Contrast, Color.

The other day I plugged in my external hard drive and checked out some photos from the archives of my previous life…

I don’t remember why I took these photos, but they seem to work. They have simple elements: a purple floor, dark brown high-back chairs, several watermelons, and my cat, Sugar.

The townhouse I lived in at the time had some ugly carpet in it and one rainy weekend I had had enough and ripped it all out. I planned to install some bamboo flooring but all I could afford at the time was some paint…

The chairs were part of a dining room set purchased just after moving in. I was 46 then and buying my first dining room set made me feel like a grown-up.

I don’t know why I had so many watermelons. I like watermelons.

Sugar was 18 years old in these photos. She once ruled the neighborhood. She spent most of her time outside during her first 15 years and never lost a fight with any man or beast. When she started to slow down I kept her inside because she never gave up the idea that she was on top. She was typically a sleepy, mellow cat but when confronted she only had one response: imagine a cat hissing fuuuck youuu assshole!

I gave the chairs and dining room set to my son and his wife. The two of them and their 2.9 children use them every day.

Sugar went on to live a total of 21 years. I loved that cat.

  1. There’s something about seeing watermelons sitting on chairs that makes me laugh. They look like they’re in a doctor’s waiting room. And Sugar must have been an awesome cat. 21 years is amazing. My cat, Pickles, was with me until she was 19 and I though that was old!

    • That’s funny! Maybe I should have added some People magazines as well! Pickles was pretty darn old at 19. Sugar didn’t do a lot after 19 except lay in front of the fireplace and stretch every 6 hours or so (accompanied by a loud screech that always made me jump!).
Thanks for stopping by and checking out my blog!

  2. I enjoyed reading your article. The pictures were amazing and they captured and took hold of me. I love the colours of the room. But..I enjoyed the words the most. Thanks for sharing your site with me and thanks for looking at my site

  3. The photos are beautifully simple. But I have to confess when I saw the first one, it looked like a sort of meme. I expected Sugar to have a thought balloon saying something like, “There’s nothing to see here; just keep moving along now.” I’m sorry, I can’t help myself. And damn, I LOVE that floor.

  4. Ha! That’s funny! Maybe I’ll photoshop that in there! I have just checked out some of your blog, what a great writer you are! I’m an instant fan and look forward to following you and consuming your thoughts! Congrats on being FP’d and thanks for stopping by my place!

  6. Red,
    Congrats on the induction!

Not sure why, but this post felt poignant and my eyes began to itch and water – well done.

I love purple, I enjoy cats, watermelon is yummy and chairs are good to sit and pose watermelons in.

    Happy Holidays,
    Kina
